Reuters: Kazakhstan six times increased oil exports bypassing Russia
According to the results of the first quarter, Kazakhstan exported 163.4 thousand tons of oil via the Aktau-Baku sea route, which is six times more than a year earlier. Deliveries via the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline amounted to 104 thousand tons
In the first quarter of 2023, Kazakhstan increased oil exports bypassing Russia to reduce dependence on Moscow, Reuters reported, citing Refinitiv data and industry sources.
In January-March, supplies from the Caspian port of Aktau to Baku (the main route bypassing Russia) amounted to 163.4 thousand tons. This is six times more than in the same period in 2022 (28.8 thousand tons).
Kazmortransflot, the national sea carrier of Kazakhstan, told the agency that in the first quarter of 2023, another 104,000 tons of oil were shipped via the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) pipeline, to which oil is transported via the Caspian Sea. Kazakhstan also supplies China with more than 80,000 tons of oil per month.
As noted by Reuters, although the export of Kazakh oil through the Caspian Sea and through the Caucasus is relatively small, it has risen sharply since Russia began hostilities in Ukraine. Last year, the volume of supplies via alternative routes reached 1.8 million tons (36 thousand barrels per day), while in 2021 it was 638 thousand tons.
According to Kommersant, in 2023 Kazmortransflot will purchase two oil tankers to supply its oil for export bypassing Russia through Azerbaijan, increasing its Caspian fleet to five vessels. This year, Kazmunaigas plans to send 1.5 million tons of oil from the Tengiz field via the BTC; in March, Kazakhstan shipped 20 thousand tons, and in April they should grow to 125 thousand tons. Sources in the newspaper said that the government of Kazakhstan is discussing the option of a significant increase in deliveries through it to 20 million tons annually.
As the newspaper noted, earlier 80% of oil exports went through Russia along two pipeline routes: the Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC) pipe to the port of Novorossiysk and the Atyrau-Samara pipeline, after which the fuel went to Ust-Luga. The volume of pumping on the first route last year amounted to 52.2 million tons and on the second - 8.4 million tons. In 2022, supplies through the CPC were repeatedly suspended due to repairs, and President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev instructed them to find alternative routes.
