US company to build up to 20 nuclear power units in Ukraine

Energoatom agreed with a US company on the construction of 20 nuclear power units

Energoatom and American Holtec International have signed an agreement to build up to 20 nuclear power units with SMR-160 reactors in Ukraine, a Ukrainian company reported on Facebook (owned by Meta, which is recognized as extremist in Russia and banned).

Chris Singh, President and CEO of Holtec International, signed the agreement via video link. The ceremony was also attended by Minister of Energy of Ukraine German Galushchenko and Vice President of Holtec International for activities in Ukraine Riaz Avan.

It is planned that the first of 20 reactors will be connected to the grid by March 2029. Galushchenko noted that this would help compensate for the damage caused to Ukraine's heat and power infrastructure. As part of the agreement, high-tech production of components for SMR will also be launched in the country.

The SMR-160 is a 160 MW light water reactor fueled by low-enriched uranium. The reactor does not need to be connected to the local power supply. Modular reactors can be built at the plant and then transported and put into operation at any prepared site. They can supply large energy consumers such as ships or manufacturing facilities.
