Globo: Telegram handed over required data to Brazilian police to avoid blocking
Telegram handed over to the Brazilian Federal Police data on "neo-Nazi groups", a member of which, according to the authorities, may be involved in attacks in schools, according to the local portal G1.
Earlier, on April 20, the court gave Telegram 24 hours to provide the necessary information, and in case of failure to comply, threatened with a fine of 100,000 reais (1.6 million rubles) and suspension of the messenger in the country.
Brazilian police decided to send such a request after investigators found out that the 16-year-old teenager who fired at schools in Aracruz (Espirito Santo state) in November 2022 was a member of Telegram groups. On November 25, a teenager opened fire at three schools in the city, killing four people, and ten people were injured.
“Law enforcement determined that the juvenile offender was a member of Telegram groups that distributed extremist material, including murder videos, bomb-making tutorials, hate speech against minorities, and neo-Nazi ideals,” police said in a statement to G1.
In March last year, Brazil's Supreme Court decided to block Telegram because the messenger failed to comply with a requirement to block profiles that spread false information. In particular, it was about the account of blogger Allan dos Santos, one of the closest allies of the ex-president of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro. He was a suspect in a case of spreading fake news and attacking judges. After Telegram complied with the requirements, the court reversed its blocking decision.
